Diploma Exams in Alberta

Alberta Education administers Grade 12 diploma exams several times throughout the year.

Purpose of Diploma Exams

The Grade 12 Diploma Exam Program is designed to:

  • Certify individual student achievement in select Grade 12 courses
  • Ensure consistent, province-wide standards
  • Report results at both the individual and group level

2026 Diploma Exam Changes

To support student learning following the teacher strike, the Government of Alberta has made the following changes:

  • January 2026 diploma exams and Grade 9 PATs have been cancelled
  • Students are automatically exempted

If students choose not to write a diploma exam later:

  • Their school-awarded mark becomes the final course mark
  • A transcript notation will indicate that no diploma exam was written
  • Graduation and post-secondary opportunities will not be affected

Students may choose to write diploma exams at a later date:

  • April or June 2026
