Diploma Exams in Alberta
Alberta Education administers Grade 12 diploma exams several times throughout the year.
Purpose of Diploma Exams
The Grade 12 Diploma Exam Program is designed to:
- Certify individual student achievement in select Grade 12 courses
- Ensure consistent, province-wide standards
- Report results at both the individual and group level
2026 Diploma Exam Changes
To support student learning following the teacher strike, the Government of Alberta has made the following changes:
- January 2026 diploma exams and Grade 9 PATs have been cancelled
- Students are automatically exempted
If students choose not to write a diploma exam later:
- Their school-awarded mark becomes the final course mark
- A transcript notation will indicate that no diploma exam was written
- Graduation and post-secondary opportunities will not be affected
Students may choose to write diploma exams at a later date:
- April or June 2026
Important Information
Students writing diploma exams must:
- Present valid photo ID
- Bring their own supplies (pens, HB pencils, and an approved calculator)

Student results are available on myPass approximately three weeks after writing diploma exams.
